UAE VAT, in brief

  • Register at AED 375,000
  • Voluntary from AED 187,500
  • File every quarter

How VAT applies

Standard, zero-rated or exempt.

Not every supply is taxed the same way. Getting the treatment right is what keeps your returns accurate and your input VAT recoverable.

Most supplies

5%

Standard-rated

Most goods and services

The headline UAE VAT rate, charged on most taxable supplies and reclaimed on what you buy.

  • Charged on taxable sales
  • Input VAT reclaimable
  • Reported each return period

0%

Zero-rated

Exports, international transport, some health and education

Supplies that carry no VAT but still let you recover the VAT on your costs.

  • No VAT charged to the customer
  • Input VAT still reclaimable
  • Must still be reported

Exempt

Exempt supplies

Some financial services, residential leases, bare land

Supplies outside VAT, where the VAT on related costs usually cannot be recovered.

  • No VAT charged
  • Input VAT not recoverable
  • Can affect registration

Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000, and voluntary from AED 187,500. Not sure where you stand? We check your numbers and register you at the right time.

Good to know

VAT, answered.

Do I have to register for VAT in the UAE?
Registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports pass AED 375,000 in the past twelve months or are expected to in the next thirty days. You can register voluntarily from AED 187,500, which lets you reclaim input VAT early. We check your numbers and register you at the right moment.
What is the UAE VAT rate?
The standard rate is 5% on most goods and services. Some supplies are zero-rated at 0%, such as exports and international transport, and others are exempt, such as certain financial services and residential leases. We apply the correct treatment to each line so your returns are accurate.
How often do I file VAT returns?
Most businesses file quarterly, while larger turnovers may file monthly. The return and any payment are due within 28 days of the end of the tax period through EmaraTax. We prepare, review and file every return so you never miss a deadline.
Can I reclaim VAT in the UAE?
Yes. VAT you pay on business costs, your input VAT, can usually be recovered against the VAT you charge. When your input VAT is higher, you can claim a refund from the FTA. We make sure every eligible amount is reclaimed.
Which supplies are zero-rated or exempt?
Zero-rated supplies include exports outside the GCC, international transport and some healthcare and education. Exempt supplies include certain financial services, residential property leases, bare land and local passenger transport. The difference matters because exempt supplies usually block input VAT recovery, so we map your activity carefully.
What records do I need to keep for VAT?
VAT records and tax invoices must be kept for at least five years, and longer for real estate. We maintain VAT-ready books and store the supporting documents so you are always ready for an FTA review.
What happens if I register or file late?
The FTA applies a AED 10,000 penalty for late registration, plus further penalties for late or inaccurate returns and payments. We track every deadline and file accurately so you stay clear of avoidable penalties.
Can you handle the whole VAT process?
Yes. We cover FTA registration, VAT bookkeeping, preparing and filing returns, reclaiming input VAT and advising on zero-rating, exemptions and deregistration. One advisor handles it from start to finish.
